I packed my bag and in it I put… 5 Off Grid Travel Accessories

by Sina Murphy Chan

For most people packing is an arduous process, often left to the last minute, which results in a number of unnecessary items slipping in and essentials getting forgotten. However, when packing to venture off grid to some of the world’s most remote destinations, thinking ahead is essential as the nearest shop may be well over an hour away. We have compiled a short list of some of the holiday essentials we bring to ensure you make the most of your off grid adventure by packing the right accessories for your hideaway.

Binoculars – A handy instrument to observe wildlife, magnify distant or inaccessible territory, and strange unidentifiable objects that might raise curiosity on your wanders. Inspect and marvel at the vivid coloured parrots in the Brazilian rainforest or trace the views of the Serra do Mar peaks from your Catuçaba Hideaway deck. Keep the binoculars within reach as you canter on horseback through this cavalhada country as there is always something to discover on the horizon.

Thermos Flask – A sturdy, well-made Thermos flask is an invaluable accessory for any off grid adventure regardless of the climate. Whether you want a toasty cup of tea or coffee whilst you’re chasing the Northern Lights or an ice-cold isotonic drink to quench your thirst on a humid hike, a trusty Thermos flask is always a good idea. On Vega Island a thermos flask is as an essential companion on a hike as a raincoat and good boots are. Enjoy your booster brew on a hike through Unesco-protected Vegaøyan territory, far from chic cafés and designer restaurants or keep your soup warm for a picnic on one of the breathtaking deserted beaches.

Sketchbook – Sketching and keeping a travel journal is not only the best way to slow down and practice true mindfulness but also creates a memorable souvenir from your off grid holiday. Discover a whole new palette of colours in Sri Lanka; write down exotic recipes and blend in tones of tastes and ingredients or sketch unknown tropical plants and insects. Two of our most recent guests at the Tangalle Hideaway produced beautiful aquarelle paintings of the landscape whilst on their off grid retreat.

Digital Camera – Going off grid offers the opportunity to switch off your mobile phone and experience an authentic “digital detox”. Photography becomes a true art once when you use an instrument created solely for this purpose. Discover wildflowers through your zoom or capture stunning coastal views. Or work on your stylist skills – both of our Syros Hideaways offer the perfect setting for interior shootings and jaw dropping pool pictures.

Plant and Animal Tracks Identification Guides – There’s something exciting about skimming through the pages of a plant or animal tracks identification guide. It’s impressive to see how many little differences there are to other similar species. Holding your phone close to a flower or a footprint to get an instant answer from an app may sound tempting, but good luck getting signal in our off grid destinations… Instead we recommend sticking to the old school, romantic guides and manuals. Our Colorado Hideaway is the ideal starting point to explore the flora and fauna of the mighty Rocky Mountains, including natives such as mule deer, bobcats, black bears and rutting elks.
