The House
In this special patch of rural Portugal, Pa.te.os’ four secluded modernist villas create a dream escape. The boundaries between nature and home are permeable, and living spaces inside and out offer both a refuge from the elements and an invitation to embrace them. The heady scent of ground-creeping rock roses is carried inshore on an Atlantic breeze; floor-to-ceiling windows, sheltered terraces and chapel-like nooks celebrate panoramic views of sea and sky.
Award-winning architect Manuel Aires Mateus worked with owners Sofia and Miguel Charters to realise their vision to enjoy the pleasure of hosting friends and holding space together, the better to slow down. Inspired by the rural residences of Serra de Grândola, where dwellings blend into the landscape, and Moorish courtyard architecture, Pa.te.os’ built forms are calm, contemplative and promote deep relaxation. The four villas are independent, offering complete privacy – there are one-, two- and three-bedroom options – but for larger groups they can be booked together to create a unique holiday estate.
Interiors invite sensory response, with tactile surfaces and hand-crafted elements. This is a partnership between form and function that celebrates concrete, untreated wood European oak and natural stone. Local artisan woodworkers and stonemasons lend their skill, blending simple, honest materials with Italian and Scandinavian design pieces, and edges are softened with woven rattan and softly draped linens.
Pa.te.os can arrange gentle activities from yoga and holistic wellness treatments to cooking lessons, wine tastings, beach trips and more. Spend days watching the clouds drift from the immense windows, the distant crash of waves creating a bassline to the birdsong, before gathering to enjoy spectacular sunsets and share freshly cooked Mediterranean meals beneath the stars.
