Becoming Iceman
They call him “The Iceman”. It sounds like the description of a cartoon superhero, who uses his own biochemistry to adapt his body to extreme cold in his fight for happiness, strength and health. However, this is a real human being, named Wim Hof.
The eccentric Dutch man is holder of 26 official Guinness World Records, most often showcased in extreme cold conditions, that include standing in a tub covered with ice cubes for almost 2 hours, swimming 57.5 meters under a thick layer of sealed ice in only trunks and goggles, climbing the Kilimanjaro and almost 7500 meters of Mount Everest wearing only shorts and shoes, running marathons around the polar circle barefoot and through the desert without drinking one sip of water.
The self-proclaimed lover of life is father of five children. After the very sad event, when his wife committed suicide a few decades ago, he vowed to demonstrate to himself and the whole world, how his training method can achieve the greatest impact on the human body. Since then he is on a mission to spread happiness and health in the world, and has become a renowned coach for numerous athletes and celebrities from big wave surfer Laird Hamilton, Lord of the Rings actor Orlando Bloom to the Grande Dame of show biz Oprah Winfrey.

Often believed to be a genetic phenomenon and one of a kind, Wim Hof has set out to prove that anyone can learn how to master what he calls the WIM HOF METHOD and proclaims that a cold shower a day will keep the doctor away as his method boots the immune system like no other artificial substance.
THE BENEFITS – REDUCE STRESS, NEVER GET SICK AGAIN AND BE HAPPY
The Wim Hof Method is built on the following three pillars:
- COLD THERAPY
- BREATHING
- COMMITMENT/MINDSET
By combining these three components you should be able to tap into the unlimited potential of your own biochemistry and take control over your nervous system and immune system.

Let’s take a closer look into these three pillars:
1. COLD THERAPY:
It is believed that by exposing the body to ice or very cold temperatures you are able to actively increase the concentration of stress hormones in your body and decrease the number of inflammatory proteins. In addition, the cold activates the immune system and white blood cells are produced which combat diseases.
A study conducted by the Thrombosis Research Institute (ME, CVS,
Documentation Centre, 1994) showed that people who took a daily cold shower had significantly more white blood cells in comparison to people who did not.
2. BREATHING:
Through a special breathing technique you can change the pH level of your body to alkaline and allow more oxygen to flow. This has an effect on the energy management in your body. The mitochondrial activity is boosted which results into a higher performance in each cell.
3. COMMITMENT/MINDSET:
This is the most important pillar of all. If you can fully commit to the cold and to the breathing technique then you should be able to achieve the health benefits Wim Hof promotes.
